Kimi ni Todoke 4/5

I remember seeing the picture for this in the preview thread and being utterly uninterested in it. All those light colours. Such a charming scene. It being done by Production IG was interesting though and not who Id have expected. I still didnt touch it though. It wasnt till the first ep was shown at animoo society did I watch it. It started pleasant enough. Sawako was a nice though shy girl. But those are always the ones who get bullied by everyone else. So she did some favour for the class, cant remember what or why. Then some from her class gave her a drink to thank her. I remember thinking “No teenagers are that nice. They must have sabotaged it somehow to laugh at her expense. They probably pee’ed in it. Kids are such bastards.” But that didnt happen they were actually thanking her and she was happy. And thats how this series grabbed me.

Characters:Sawako is amazingly cute. She’s very quiet and shy, and people are scared of her because she looks like Sadako from the ring. But she isnt scary at all. It is funny to see people be terrified of her when she tries to do them a favour. Chizuru and …the one with the massive lips, I forget her name are the two who become Sawako’s closest friends …yano was her name. They are pretty damn amusing and look out or her. Theres also the guy Sawako likes ….cant remember his name, but he was a dolt. He’s the talkative popular guy who is nice to Sawako, but is kind of shy aswell. I found him to be pretty boring half the time though …really cant remember his name. *looks it up* Its Kazehaya. Ryu was much more interesting, he doesnt say or do an awful lot, but at times he seems to talk sense.

Plot:Quiet, missunderstood shy girl goes to school and makes friends. That is generally it to begin with. We see Sawako engaging with the people around her and showing them that she isnt a character from a horror film. Unfortunatly she isnt too clued up on social things so misunderstands lots. Watching her overcome this and become more open and make friends with people was lovely. She is such a nice girl. This was the best part of the series and made me go “aww” every week. At one point there is a minor conflict that is dragged on for too long. Some girl called Kurumi is a ******* bitch. She makes things difficult for sawako briefly, spreading pathetic rumours that sort of thing. Then she tries to cry her way out of it. The latter half of the series is about how Kazehaya and Sawako become closer, or first make eyecontact. About midway the series isnt as cute as it was and the pacing is slower and more boring. The kurumi bitch stuff should have been dealt with much faster.

Animation: Not what I would have expected from Production IG. The series certainly looked like a shoujo series. Lots of light pastel colours. Nothing bold. Pretty well done cant complain about it. At certain moments where Sawako is at her cutest or where some of the others are reacting, the characters change to a very cute deformed style. Overall very good as you’d expect from IG.

Sound: Well it was all very nice and pleasant. So fit the series well.

Conclusion: I thought the first half this series was great. But that stuff with kurumi and the pacing after was not helpful. Eventually I got pretty bored of the whole kazehaya Sawako thing and found, Ryu and Chizuru’s relationship to be more interesting. But over all it was still a good series. I will certainly be watching the sequel if there is one.
